TypeRacer got there first, and got it right

TypeRacer has been running typing races since 2008 and it proved the thing everything else in this space depends on: racing another human over the same passage is dramatically more compelling than typing at a clock on your own. If you found competitive typing through TypeRacer, so did most people.

What it does not have is anything on the line. You race, you win, the result goes into a history page. For a lot of players that is exactly right. For the ones who have been playing for years and have started to wonder what the point is, that is the gap TypeBag fills.

The structural differences

Format. TypeBag duels are strictly one against one. A single opponent, one passage, one winner, closer to a chess game than a field race.
Stakes. Duels are free, or $1 to $10 in USDC. The winner takes 90% of the pot; TypeBag takes a flat 10% rake and nothing else. See stakes and fees.
Rating. Per-stake-tier Glicko-2 plus a global MMR, so your $1 and $10 ratings move independently and matchmaking can bracket you tightly at each level.
Account requirement. The free tier needs no account at all: you can start an anonymous guest session and be racing in seconds. An account is only needed once money or a chosen opponent is involved.
Where the race is decided. On TypeBag the server validates every keystroke against the expected character and computes your speed itself; the browser only draws the race. That is a necessity once money is involved.

Those are descriptions of TypeBag. We are not going to characterise another product's internals; if you want to compare specifics, check theirs directly rather than taking a competitor's word for it.

Who should stay on TypeRacer

Genuinely, plenty of people:

Anyone under 18. TypeBag is 18+ and there is no version of this where that flexes.
Phone and tablet players. TypeBag is desktop only: a duel needs a physical keyboard to be fair, so mobile can browse but not play.
Anyone who does not want money in their hobby. That is a completely reasonable position. The free tier exists, but if wagering is not for you at all, a free racing site is the better home.
Players in a blocked region. TypeBag is unavailable in sanctioned countries and nine US states; see where you can play.
People who like the big multi-car field. One-on-one is a different feel, and if what you enjoy is a pack race, TypeBag will feel austere.

Moving your habit across

Start on the free tier: no deposit, no account, and it is the same engine the paid tiers run on, so you find out how the passages and the pacing feel before anything is at risk. When the queue at your tier is thin you can race a ghost instead: a real player's recorded run, replayed keystroke for keystroke, so you are never sitting in an empty lobby.
